NAGAON, Oct 4 - Following the gruesome killing of an upcoming businessman at Rantholi village in Nagaon by two brothers on Saturday night, a mob of the locality went on a rampage and created a tense situation in the village since this morning.

The mob subsequently picked up both of the main accused and resolved to try them on the spot instead of handing them over to the police.

Police in due course fired in the air in order to disperse the mob. CRPF personnel were immediately deployed in the village and a baton charge was conducted by police to bring the situation under control.

Sources informed that an upcoming businessman of Rantholi village named Prasanta Bania, who was a dealer in traditional Assamese ornaments, had gone to purchase medicines from Rajabheti Tiniali near his residence on Saturday night.

While returning, one Chikendrajit and his younger brother Kalam of the same village hacked him to death with sharp weapons and then fled the scene.

Some people of the village picked up Chikendrajit and his brother Kalam from a house in the same village early this morning while they were hiding there and set a public trial for his punishment instead of handing them over to the police.

In the meantime, Nagaon Sadar police arrived there and when they tried to bring both of them to Nagaon Police Station, the mob created a ruckus, sources added.

Police finally managed to bring the situation under control and brought both the accused brothers to Nagaon Police Station. Chikendrajit was later admitted to Nagaon Swahid Bhugeswari Phookonani Civil Hospital for treatment, were he died.
