|Safai karmis felicitated at Jorhat, Majuli|
JORHAT, Oct 3 - The Jorhat district administration on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti felicitated safai karmis (cleaning workers) of Jorhat Municipal Board, JMCH and Covid Care Centres in a function held at the Gandhi Park here.
A gamosa and a citation were presented to the workers who were playing a significant role in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic and also contributing a lot in maintaining cleanliness and sanitation during the normal situation.
Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa attended the function as the chief guest and paid homage to Mahatma Gandh by garlanding his statue. In his address, Tasa urged the people to follow the path of non-violence as preached by Gandhiji and foster brotherhood and peace.
Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Roshni A Korati, Additional Deputy Commissioner and JMB Executive Officer Biswajit Phukan, Additional Deputy Commissioners–Vivek Shyam and Surjya Kamal Bora –were among the officials present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Korati while recalling Gandhiji’s teachings, said that the great leader’s ideals of speaking the truth and practising non-violence leads people towards God and same should be followed daily.
As part of the 151st Gandhi Jayanti celebrations Korati later inaugurated a webinar on the topic ‘Relevance of Gandhi’s thoughts in 21st century’ which was attended by students of 15 colleges of the district.
Majuli celebrations: Meanwhile, in Majuli too, 21 cleaning workers posted at Covid-Care centres and hospitals in the Brahmaputra island, were felicitated in a function held at the Majuli Deputy Commissioner’s office complex.
In the function presided over by the Majuli Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi, the DC, the Joint Director of Health Services Dr Nilakanta Pegu and other district administration officials presented a gamosa along with a gift packet each to the cleaners.
