DIBRUGARH, Oct 3 - Citizens here today celebrated the swearing-in of the country’s Chief Justice by bursting crackers, with some even lighting lamps and candles in the evening. Justice Ranjan Gogoi was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India today.
Dibrugarh, which is the home town of Justice Gogoi, celebrated his elevation to the highest judicial post in the country with due fanfare. Says Pradip Bharuka, a local businessman: “Dibrugarh till now has produced three Supreme Court judges, with Justice Gogoi we have finally had a Chief Justice too.” The two others were Justice Parbati Kumar Goswami and the still serving Justice Amitava Roy.
Other than the Supreme Court, the city was also home to prominent High Court judges like Justice SK Dutta, and Justice Dhiren Baruah. The former served the Gauhati and Punjab High Courts as Chief Justice, among his other assignments.
Senior advocate Jogendranath Borah, who is also the president of the Dibrugarh Nagarik Sangha, said Dibrugarh has a glorious legal history, hinging around the northeast’s oldest Bar, the Dibrugarh Bar Association. Members of the local Bar today celebrated the assumption of office by Justice Gogoi with a get-together of all advocates, even as enthusiastic young lawyers burst crackers in joy.
Justice Gogoi, who passed his HSLC from the Don Bosco School here in 1970, has also enthused all past pupils of the school. Now called the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, its present Principal, Father KC Vincent today told this newspaper that all Don Bosco pupils of the country are a proud lot today. He said he had recently spoken to Father Tom Karthik, who was Dibrugarh Don Bosco headmaster in 1970, and that the veteran educationist still recalls Ranjan Gogoi as a bright student. Father Karthik also told Father Vincent that he was quite familiar with Late Keshab Chandra Gogoi too (father of Justice Gogoi). While the past pupils as well as the studying students of Dibrugarh Don Bosco exult, the Don Bosco community as a whole has one more reason to flaunt their credentials.
