GUWAHATI, Oct 2 - Apollosana Mangang Rajkumar of Manipur emerged winner in the Dipak Ghatuar Memorial International Fide Rating Chess Tournament which came to an end at the Bir Lachit Borphukan College, Sivasagar today.
In the final round he drew against Sayan Bose to secure the title while top seed Y Dhanabir Singh of Manipur had to settle for the third position by agreeing for a draw with Suvradeepta Das of West Bengal. Former Assam and North East champion Santanu Borpatra Gohain defended well against an aggressive play of Mughaho Awomi of Nagaland and scored full point to secure the 4th position. Young chess prodigy Shahil Dey of Assam gave a tough fight to Samrat Ghorai of West Bengal and held him to a draw to secure the 5th position.
The tournament was organised by the Sivasagar District Chess Association and supported by Bir Lachit Borphukan College, ATTSA Demow Branch and Assam Chess Club.
Altogether 175 players from across the northeast, including few players from West Bengal participated in this 9-round Swiss League event with a total prize money of Rs 2,45,000.
