Sports Reporter GUWAHATI, Oct 2 - The 65th Donic Sitaram Agarwalla Inter District and State Table Tennis Championship got under way at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium, in the RG Baruah Sports Complex here today.

Around 400 players from districts like Guwahati, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Nazira, Dibrugarh, Duliajan, North Lakhimpur, Silchar along with institutions like Oil India Limited and NF Railway are taking part in the five-day championship which has been organised by the Assam Table Tennis Association (ATTA).
Altogether eight international standard tables are using to hold the tournament where competitions will be conducted in five categories-Senior, Youth, Junior, Sub-junior and cadet for both male and female.
The championship was formally inaugurated by State DGP Mukesh Sahay. Inaugurating the meet Sahay said sports play a vital role in building character and career. He also urged the youngsters to take the game seriously so that they can improve their game and become honest citizen.
ATTA secretary Tridib Duvarah welcomed the gathering. He also explained about the past glory of the game in Assam and hoped in the coming days the State will be able to produce quality players.
Former players Sankar Dutta Lahkar, Pranab Chankakati, Carfew Roy, ATTA treasurer Nayanjyoti Sarma were also present on the occasion as guests.
The preliminary round matches were started today.
