Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr Bora |
GUWAHATI, Oct 2 – Dr Lakshmi Nandan Bora, Editor of Gariyoshi, and a Saraswati Samman recipient, was today honoured by the Publication Board Assam with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his seminal contribution to Assamese literature.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi gave away the award comprising a citation, a trophy, a chador, and an amount of Rs 3 lakh in presence many literary figures from different parts of the State. Among those present on the occasion were playwright Arun Sarma, and Bengali writer Shankar along with State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Receiving the award, Dr Bora expressed his gratitude to those who deemed it fit to give him the high honour, and at the same time revealed his indebtedness to his wife who had provided him with support and encouragement. “Except for one novel, I had written all my other novels after my marriage,” he said, adding that it would not have been possible without family support.
He recalled the late Dr Birendranath Bhattacharya as someone who had inspired him to write, and other writers whose works made him feel small and insignificant.
Referring to books, Dr Bora said that while there have been apprehensions over the popularity of various electronic media, the future of books in human civilization is secure. Electronic media can never compete with books, he asserted.
