DIGBOI, Nov 28 - Following rise in unlawful activities and constant movement of members of banned militant outfit, United Liberation Front of Asom (I) across Tinsukia district, the security agencies have been alerted in vulnerable pockets like Digboi, Pengaree, Bordumsa, Kakopather, Doomdoma and Makum, where according to intelligence inputs large-scale sabotage activities including kidnapping and extortion were being planned by militant outfits.
Meanwhile, seeking inputs of counter-insurgency operations being conducted, after a group of five armed militants led by Rupam Asom served extortion demand to various tea gardens and factory owners at Digboi, Doomdooma, Bordumsa and others in Tinsukia district, Ram Prasad Meena, IGP Eastern Range, Assam personally took stock of the situation when he visited Bordumsa, Jagun and Digboi police station here on Monday.
The IGP, who has been closely monitoring the developments told this correspondent that during his visit to Digboi he found that the security measures haver been effectively beefed up and adequate resources have been engaged for the hunt of militants. He assured that the hunt for the militants would soon yield results.
When asked about the threat to Digboi oiltown in particular, Meena said, “Things are right and our determined forces are working to this effect relentlessly.”
Sources here, however, added that the outfits moving about in the belt were desperate to commit large-scale sabotage, particularly in Digboi.
“Our intention this time is to strike hard, a strike that would be remembered,” said one of the ULFA cadres to a tea garden worker during their extortion bid recently.
Meanwhile, security measures in Digboi have been beefed up to counter any anti-social activity of the outfit. As per sources, security has been intensified across the industrial town, specially in the tea garden areas beside ensuring constant patrolling and operations around oil pipelines, railway tracks and busy places.
Others related organisations including the VDPs, Digboi Nagarik Committee, Women Cell etc., were sensitised on Monday during a formal emergency meeting. However, no report of any violence or untoward incident have been reported till the filing of this report.
