RHAC elections end peacefully
Correspondent
GOALPARA, Nov 25 – The curtains came down on the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) polls soon after the completion of the third and final phase at 3 pm today with 64.1 per cent of the total 50,366 voters exercising their franchise to decide the fate of 27 candidates in the remaining six constituencies — Salpara, Habraghat, Jinari, Bardamal Kalyanpur, Dariduri and Joyram Kuchi.

The overall situation on the ground remain peaceful as long queues could be seen in the early hours in front of the polling booths, while low voters turnout, as reported by reliable sources, could be seen in many places with majority Garo population. No votes were polled at Baida, Geradubi, Jognapara Derek and Rongatuli (right) polling stations having 100 per cent Garo population under Jinari constituency.

It may be mentioned that this is the first ever elections after 17 years to have been completed in three phases since the RHAC was constituted in 1995 and with a high percentage of polling recorded, it is evident that the people will like to see their elected members look after the affairs of the council for the first time amidst high expectations.

Talking to this correspondent over phone Tankeswar Rabha, convenor, Rabha Hasong Joint Movement Committee (RHJMC) expressed his sincere gratitude to all the members of various communities residing in the RHAC area for creating a congenial atmosphere. He also thanked various organisations for lending their support for peaceful conduct of the RHAC polls. In particular, he thanked the State Election Commission and the district administration for holding the elections by overcoming a number of difficulties.

Meanwhile, the District Election Officer (DEO), also the DC, congratulated all his staff members and the security force personnel for their coordinated efforts and also thanked the people for the peaceful conduct of the RHAC elections.
