GUWAHATI, Nov 24 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented the Mahabir Lachit Award 2017 to proprietor of the Sadin-Pratidin Group Jayanta Baruah at a solemn function organised by the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad as part of Lachit Divas celebration at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here today.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal lauded Jayanta Baruah’s contribution towards promoting free and responsible journalism in the State.
Sonowal also underlined the importance of strengthening all the four pillars of democracy for making India more vibrant.
He also highlighted the role played by former Governor of Assam late SK Sinha in promoting Lachit Borphukan in the national arena. Sonowal said as a result of the efforts taken by late Sinha with support from the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the best cadet award of the National Defence Academy was named after Lachit Borphukan.
The Chief Minister also underscored the heroism and patriotism of Lachit Borphukan and the ideals of Sukafa for integration and harmony in the State.
Water Resources Minister Keshav Mahanta, awardee Baruah, litterateur Ismail Hussain and Lakshminath Phukan also spoke on the occasion.
