Poultry Corporation to sell eggs at 10 retail outlets in city
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Nov 24 - As soaring egg prices continue to upset the daily budget of the common people, the government has further reduced the minimum retail price of this item to Rs 6 apiece. For the ease of the consumers, the Assam Livestock and Poultry Corporation Limited has taken the initiative to sell eggs at the fixed rates in ten locations of Guwahati city.

Egg prices saw a sudden surge due to the rate hike at the source. As Andhra Pradesh is the largest supplier of eggs to Assam, an increase in the rates in the producing state had a direct impact on the consumer markets. However, consumers here are having to take the extra burden due to exorbitant price hike in the retail market.

Till date, consumers are paying Rs 7 per egg, despite the maximum retail rates fixed at Rs 6.5 by the authorities a couple of days back.

“From Rs 5.10 per piece, the rate of egg has come down to Rs 4.80 at the source and thus, after transportation and packaging cost the retailers can sell it at Rs 6 per piece. We have ample supply that can be channelised through all the retailers, provided they sell it at Rs 6 per piece,” Corporation Chairman Manoj Saikia told The Assam Tribune.

The entire State sees a demand for approximately 30 lakh eggs per day with Guwahati city alone consuming 3 lakh units daily. Nearly 90 per cent of the total demand for eggs in the State is met by Andhra Pradesh.

“Since prices of commodities go up in Assam owing to high transportation cost, we have written to the National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC) to consider the case of Assam and the North East and keep the rate slab lower for the region,” Saikia further added.

Along with monitoring the market with the help of wholesale egg dealers, the Corporation has also given a proposal to the government to increase egg production in the State.

The ten egg retail points started in Guwahati today include the Corporation’s outlets at Khanapara and Chenikuthi, Deuri Borthers at Noonmati, Pradip Brothers in Colony Bazar, Bamunimaidam, TBC at Pandu Bor Bazar, Egg Shopping Point at Kalapahar Colony, Shreeram Egg Agency at Hijubari, Hatigaon, Dutta Bhandar at Adabari, Saha Egg Store at Gotanagar and SR Egg Store at Beltola.
