State pays rich tributes to Lachit Barphukan

 GUWAHATI, Nov 24 – Lachit Divas was observed today all over the State with various programmes. The day is being observed to commemorate the heroic exploits of Lachit Barphukan, the great legendary hero and Commander of the then Ahom Kingdom, in the State. Lachit Barphukan thwarted a strong attempt by Mughal forces under the command of Ram Singh and inflicted a crushing defeat on them in the historic battle of Saraighat in 1671. This was stated in an official press release.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi led the State in paying rich tributes to the great hero at a function organised by the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration at Lachit Barphukan Park at Jalukbari in the city.

Gogoi said the great Ahom general’s heroic exploits, his indomitable spirit and unbounded patriotism would continue to inspire and motivate the people for all time to come. He called upon the young generation to imbibe the head and heart qualities of Lachit Barphukan and bring laurels to the State and the nation as a whole.

The Chief Minister instructed the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) Ashutosh Agnihotri to preserve the pond close to the Lachit Barphukan Park which adds beauty and charm to the place and to initiate steps to beautify the surrounding areas.
