DIPHU, Nov 21 – Hundreds of students on Tuesday demonstrated at the entrance of the Assam University, Diphu Campus (AU-DC), demanding the ouster of Prof Sailen Dutta Das, a faculty member of the Political Science department.
The students sought the immediate suspension of Das, who was earlier suspended by the university authority on the basis of the accusation made by a woman postgraduate scholar. But he returned to his duty armed with a Gauhati High Court interim order, revoking his suspension order.
The student council of the AU-DC alleged that the teacher might attempt to tamper with the attendance and examination process. Later, on the verbal assurance of the Pro Vice Chancellor of the university’s Diphu campus, Dr Amalesh Bhowal, to the effect that the teacher would not be allowed to interfere in the examination process and a competent authority of the university would soon conclude the inquiry against Das, the students relented and called off their strike.
When contacted, Das said the allegation levelled against him is false and fabricated, and the lady in question was never discriminated against by him throughout her academic career in the university.
Terming his suspension order as irregular, Das said that he has ample evidence to prove his claim and establish that the allegation is far from true.
