GUWAHATI, Nov 20 – With an objective to create mass awareness regarding cancer and its rising incidence, Deepsikha (Cancer Care Foundation) is going to organize a series of programmes starting from November 24.
Deepsikha has been annually organizing this awareness programme so that early detection and treatment of cancer is possible to save lives. It needs to be mentioned here that the number of cancer patients has increased alarmingly in the entire North-east. Keeping this development in mind, Deepsikha has been focusing on involving all sections of the society in its awareness programmes.
This year the two-day programme is going to kick off with a walk for cancer awareness on November 24. The walk will start from Gauhati Commerce College at 8 am. The walk will be flagged off by noted playwright Rakesh Bedi along with cancer specialists Tapan Saikia and Jina Bhattacharya. The walk will end at Nehru Stadium here.
“School and college-going students, senior citizens and cancer survivors are going to participate in the walk,” said Dr Mrinmoyee Baruah, secretary of Deepsikha, informing that the walk will be followed by a contest on innovative ideas on cancer awareness at the stadium.
“This contest is for the school and college students. We want to involve all in our awareness efforts,” said Dr Baruah adding that this awareness effort launched in the year 2008 has received good response from the public.
On November 25, a programme Pritir Anajori will be held at Pragjyoti ITA Centre for Performing Arts, Machkhowa. This evening will be dedicated to the cancer patients, the survivors and their families and will start from 5.30 pm.
