BAIHATA CHARIALI, Nov 17 - Mother is the first teacher, friend and reformer of a child, and is the best companion for a child in the journey called life.

In Indian society, mothers are compared to Ganga, Tulsi, Durga, Saraswati, Laxmi etc., and are therefore worshiped or highly respected by the society. She is a source of energy, power, inspiration and driving force to create something new in the society.

Going back in time, it is on record that a number of mothers had to face insurmountable odds and also sacrificed their lives in order to save a nation or reform a society.

Mothers therefore have to play a very important role in shaping society by nurturing their children to grow into responsible future citizens, opined Basistha Buzarbaruah, assistant regional executive of the Publicity Cell of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh, Assam region, in an open meeting at Kamalpur Block during a Matri Sanmilan held on November 16 at the historic Gopeswar Devalaya.

Buzarbaruah observed that the detrimental influence of certain western cultures had distorted our rich cultural heritage, besides adversely affecting the close bonds of society.

The mothers therefore have to shoulder a major responsibility of guiding their wards to become socially responsible future citizens, that too with humane qualities of the head and heart so as to keep the closely knit social fabric intact.

Simply making lucre-hungry engineers or doctors out of their wards is simply not enough, on the contrary, level-headed balanced citizens are the need of the hour, he stressed.

The meeting was held under the president ship of Nitish Sarma, district Sangh Chalak, where Nibhash Kalita, district executive, Parash Roy, assistant district Pramukh, social worker Sachi Prabha Deka Lahkar and Nani Abha Devi, president of Modartola Sadari Sahitya Sabha were present.

Earlier, the purpose of the meeting was elucidated by Manoj Kumar Sarma, Khanda Pramukh of Kamalpur Khanda. Ceremonial lighting of the lamp before the portrait of Bharatmata and presentation of a Borgeet by the artistes of Baihata Chariali Sangeet Kanan was performed.
