GUWAHATI, Nov 17 – In a well attended function at Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai sports complex here today, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, on behalf of Assam Government, presented Rs 20 lakh to LondonOlympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom.
Along with Mary Kom, Arjuna Award winner archer Jayanta Talukdar, who was also a part of the Indian team in London Olympics, was presented Rs 5 lakh.
The presentations were in appreciation of their achivements in the international sports arena.
Addressing the gathering, Mary Kom thanked the State Government and the Chief Minister for encouraging sportspersons. The Olympic medallists said Assam now has adequate sports infrastructure and all the sportspersons should make good use of these to improve their skills.
Speaking about her sporting career, Mary said “Since 2000, when she started boxing, she has been facing lots of hurdles. But she overtook all the challenges and achieved her goal.
She said the bronze medal in London did not satisfy her as she hoped for something bigger. She revealed that her target now is the 1216 Rio Olympic where she will try to win another medal for the country.
Mary said all the sportspersons should not consider their opponents as enemies but take them as friends and try to learn their strong sides and prepare a strategy while fighting against them. She urged the sportspersons of Assam to work hard and said when she can win an Olympic medal being a mother of two children, why they can’t do.
While speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi hailed Mary Kom for her courage and sincerity. He said, “Mary Kom is an ideal sportsperson for the entire country and globally she is a symbol of courage and hardwork.
Gogoi said the State Government is giving more priority to sports as it makes society healthy and disciplined.
Sports Minister Ajit Singh, Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain, MP Bhubaneswar Kalita, Principal Secretary of Sports and Youth Welfare VS Bhaskar, Director of Sports Gaurav Bothra were also present on the occasion.
