Will fight citizenship Bill tooth and nail: AIUDF
STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Nov 16 - Accusing the BJP-led Central and state governments of adopting contradictory stands on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) and on implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Saturday said it will strongly oppose any attempt to implement the proposed legislation.

Addressing the media, AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam said the BJP was adopting a double standard on important issues. “On one hand, you (BJP) talk of population policy and penalising people for having more than two kids, and on the other, you want to bring the CAB, which will increase the population. On one hand, you talk of safeguarding the rights of indigenous people by implementing Clause 6 and on the other, you want to bring CAB, which will hurt the local people. The government is taking a contradictory stand,” Islam said.

“The question now is whether the people who come from Bangladesh, if CAB is implemented, will be covered by Clause 6. If Hindus and other minorities from Bangladesh come after CAB is implemented and if they are not covered by Clause 6, will it not mean betraying those people? You (BJP) want to bring people from Bangladesh by citing religious persecution but once they come here, they will not be allowed to contest elections and get government jobs. It will mean betraying those people,” Islam said. He cited the example of Hindu players in the Bangladesh cricket team and Hindu judges and MPs in the neighbouring country.

“If they come to Assam, they will not even be able to contest elections, if Clause 6 is implemented. This shows the double standard of the government. On one hand, the government wants to bring them here on the pretext of religious persecution, while on the other hand, arrangements are being put in place to deprive them even of basic rights like the right to contest polls,” Islam said.

He said AIUDF will launch protests across Assam and also in New Delhi against the government’s plan to implement the CAB.
