Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Nov 16 – The Cotton Collegiate School, which had a long and memorable experience with music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika, today remembered him at a memorial function in the school campus.

It may be recalled that Dr Hazarika was a student of the Cotton Collegiate School and it was at a function here that the maestro made his first public appearance as a very young singer. His singing prowess even drew the attention of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaruah who blessed young Bhupen after listening to a song rendered by him at a school function. Dr Hazarika’s father Nilakanta Hazarika also used to teach at the school.

The day’s tribute-paying ceremony started with a formal inauguration by Dr Hazarika’s brother, also a noted singer, Samar Hazarika. Dr Hazarika’s son Tez Hazarika and grandson Sage Akash Hazarika were also present on the occasion.

Following paying of homage by the teachers, students and the union of former students, an all-faith prayer was held.

Veteran actor Dilip Hazarika delivered the memorial lecture, and it was followed by singing and recitation by the school students.

Another highlight was the rendition of the maestro’s evergreen numbers by several eminent singers who were also alumni of the school. They included Kula Baruah, Dr Anjan Jyoti Choudhury, Bipul Baruah, Devajit Choudhury and Ashim Kumar Hazarika.

Educationist Dr Satyen Choudhury performed with the violin and played several numbers of the maestro.

In the evening, naam-prasanga was held and earthen lamps were also lit.

The alumni association general secretary, Manoj Saikia conducted the proceedings.
