Kamakhya dispute takes new turn
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Nov 15 – The dispute over the elections to the posts of Dolois of the Kamakhya temple has taken a new turn with the Bardeori Samaj of the Shakti shrine announcing today that it will hold the elections to the two posts of Dolois – Bardoloi and Sarudoloi – of the temple tomorrow. The Kamrup (Metro) district administration will conduct the elections.

According to Bardeori Samaj sources, the elections will be held between 9 am and 4 pm on the temple campus and 464 members of the Bardeori Samaj will cast their votes in the elections.

The elections to the two posts connected with the conduction of the day-to-day puja, special pujas and other religious functions in the temple and in the ten other Dashamahavidya temples located on the Nilachal hillock, are being held as per the October 25 last order of the Gauhati High Court, said Samaj sources.

However, sources in the Kamakhya Debutter Board alleged that the Bardeori Samaj with this decision has gone against the November 11 directive of the Supreme Court of India, which stated that the Debutter Board would continue till the notified date of November 21, 2011.

Moreover, The Gauhati High Court had not directed the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) in its October 25 order to conduct the elections to the posts of the Dolois. Rather, the High Court had asked the State Government and the Deputy Commissioner to frame rules under Section 25 A of The Assam State Acquisition of Land Belonging to Religious or Charitable Institutions of Public Nature Act, 1959.

So the present bid to hold the elections being conducted by the Deputy Commissioner, more particularly in view of the Supreme Court order of November 11, is ultra vires, said the Debutter Board sources.
