Books on Bhupenda selling like hot cakes
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Nov 11 – Its not just his exploits in the world of music, literary works by and on Dr Bhupen Hazarika, too, are selling like hot cakes, something which has left even the leading publishers in amazement.

Banalata, Chandra Prakash and SH Publishers, the leading publishers of books on and by Dr Hazarika, are finding it difficult to meet the burgeoning demands from the book lovers, who have been seen waiting in queues to pick at least one among the many as their prized possession.

Banalata Publishers, since the death of the music maestro who was also a former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, have sold several thousand copies of books, with Bhupen Hazarikar Geet Aru Jeevan Rath compiled by Dr Dilip Kumar Dutta breaking the all-time sale record of the publishing house.

“We knew that the demand for the books by and on him will increase but never expected a response of this magnitude,” Ananta Hazarika of Banalata told The Assam Tribune.

“Approximately, over a thousand copies of Bhupen Hazarikar Geet Aru Jeevan Rath have been sold in the last three days, a response we had seldom experienced. Book lovers, young and old alike, are purchasing Dr Hazarika’s books with similar intensity. Today itself till 2:30 pm, we have sold around 500 copies and the demand is increasing,” he said.

“One of the reasons could be that the book throws light on various aspects of Dr Hazarika from the political and social to the creative spheres. Besides, the books depicts stories behind every song of his,” he stated.

Books like Agnijugor Firingoti, Bandita Bhupen Hazarika Nindita Bhupen Hazarika, Bohimaan Luitor Pare Pare (a collection of essays) by Dr Bhupen Hazarika himself, too, are also getting unprecedented response from the buyers.

“As most of our binders had gone for holiday, we are not being able to bring out more copies to match the demand. The books are being sold like a prized possession,” Hazarika said.

“It appears that the people are keeping these books more like a sacred asset than merely a book,” he pointed out.

A similar response has met Chandra Prakashan, which too had published quite a few books on the maestro. A notable one among those is Vishwa Nagarik Bhupen Hazarika.

Manager of the Chandra Prakashan outlet located in Panbazar area, Rubul Sarma, said, “The response is overwhelming to say the least.”

Publications of SH Publications including Moi Eti Jajabor, a transcripted autobiography of Dr Bhupen Hazarika and Dr Bhupen Hazarikar Geet Samagra (edited) are the most sought-after ones.

“There is a huge demand for all the books of Dr Hazarika, especially Moi Eti Jajabor. Demands have been placed from across the State,” Surya Hazarika, proprietor of SH Publications told this reporter.
