Jumbos destroy standing paddy crop at Abhoijan
Correspondent
DERGAON, Nov 10 - A herd of wild elephant numbering around 50-60 from the Nambor-Daigrong Wildlife Sanctuary have destroyed standing paddy crop in many parts of Abhoijan in Golaghat district on Saturday.

“Though this is a perennial problem for the farmers, yet this year the problem is more acute as the prospect of harvesting is very bleak,” they claimed.

It may be mentioned that elephant depredations have been increasing day-by-day in the areas like Thuramukh, Abhoijan, Murphuloni, Bokial, Letekujan, Miripathar, Doigrang etc., in the wake of rapid deforestation. Due to shrinking of forest cover, the pachyderms visit various places in quest of fodder and water.

Though we have been raising the issue before the authorities concerned again and again, but all in vain, lamented the farmers. Considering the gravity of the situation, the farmers called for drastic action to curb the trend.
