GUWAHATI, Nov 9 – The EU-NGO Forum on Human Rights has invited Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) president Akhil Gogoi to take part in its 15th conference being held with a two-day programme on December 5 and 6 at the Midi Hotel in Brussels as a speaker/moderator.
Akhil Gogoi’s name was recommended to the European Union (EU) for a forum on human rights defender/civil society by Front Line Defenders’ Protection Coordinator Pokpong Lawansiri following his (Akhil Gogoi’s) arrest after the 2001 Assembly elections in the State, said the KMSS in a statement here this evening.
Govt invitation: The State Government informed the KMSS on Friday that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi would discuss with it its demands after November 17.
The KMSS had earlier demanded steps to hold a discussion with the Chief Minister on the issues it has raised concerning introduction of a new land policy to protect the interests of the indigenous people, special status to Assam under Article 371 of the Constitution, 100 per cent utilisation of bank deposits of the State within the State, among others.
Or else, it warned that it would go for a mass rally on November 11 at the Dispur Last Gate, defying all official restrictions.
The decision of the State Government to hold a discussion at the Chief Minister’s level with the KMSS was conveyed by Jishnu Barua, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister through an e-mail sent to Akhil Gogoi.
