NEW DELHI, Nov 9 – Assam Public Works (APWs) has served a legal notice on Priyamvada Patel Hazarika, wife of legendary singer, composer Dr Bhupen Hazarika demanding withdrawal of all the defamatory statements, besides seeking directions to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to declare as a persona non grata.
The legal notice served through advocate Akhilesh Kumar Pandey by president of APWs, Abhijeet Sharma, has further asked for an unqualified apology, for making this wrong and false statement within a week of receiving this legal notice.
“It may be indicated that my client also reserves the right to file appropriate proceeding against you in criminal as well as civil court and may be entitled to recover pecuniary damages,” the notice read.
The copy of the legal notice released to the media here said late Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, who passed away on November 5, 2011 is not here to defend the defamatory statement. During his lifetime nobody raised any finger about his conduct and character.
Therefore, the statement by any stretch of imagination at this stage cannot be said to be proper and up to the mark. “Virtually it is civil as well as criminal offence for which you are liable to be prosecuted,” Sharma stated in the legal notice.
Priyamvada Hazarika, who is a Canadian citizen has recently in a TV interview linked her husband to a famous singer of the country, landing herself in trouble.
Sharma has also served notices on Canadian High Commission and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). He has requested the High Commission to take proper steps to restrain Priyamvada Patel Hazarika from making such statement which is ‘creating hatred between the two countries’.
It is further requested that Priyamvada Patel Hazarika may not be permitted by the Government of Canada to visit India and her passport to that extent (visiting India) be withdrawn, he demanded.
