DIPHU, Nov 8 – Karbi Lingri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) cadres under a ceasefire agreement with the Government staged hunger strike inside their Diphu based designated camp on Saturday from dawn to dusk demanding immediate release of its ‘defence secretary’, Songja Timung, who was arrested by Karbi Anglong police on the charge of supporting rhino poaching on October 23 last.
Altogether 201 cadres of the ceasefire KLNLF outfit, in full uniform squatted on the ground holding placards and demanded the unconditional release of their leader who was arrested on the basis of statement of Lingdok Rongpi; a rhino poacher now under police custody.
While taking part in the demonstration Thong Teron, ‘general secretary’, KLNLF told the reporters that no consultation was made with the head of the organisation before taking him into custody. The police has not produced any circumstantial evidence against Songja, till now.
He further said, “The person based on whose statement KLNLF ‘defence secretary’ has been arrested was described as a linkman of a particular ultra outfit and a rhino poacher, by the Superintendent of Police Karbi Anglong himself, recently. Strangely now all on a sudden why is the authority giving credence to the statement of an accused person”.
Meanwhile, the KLNLF has threatened to continue its democratic agitation if Songja is not released immediately. “We may opt for different path of agitation for the secure release of our leaders” Rejak Dera spokesperson, KLNLF said.
Stating on the health condition of Songja Timung, Dera said that presently the KLNLF ‘defence secretary’ is under medical treatment at Diphu civil hospital. Dera expressed surprise at the attitude of police and said that rhino poaching has taken place in Nagaon and Golaghat also, but police were hyper active in Karbi Anglong, particularly against KLNLF he added.
“We are suspecting a political conspiracy in the whole episode” Dera determinedly said. It may be mentioned here that president and general secretary of Karbi Lamate Amie, the apex Karbi literary body and Karbi cultural society also joined the demonstration with KLNLF as a mark of solidarity.
