Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 7 - A huge fire that broke out at Dhirenpara here around 6.30 pm today engulfed several houses in the locality.

Onlookers said they heard a deafening sound, possibly due to bursting of cooking gas cylinders, after which they saw flames spreading over the area.

However, it is still not confirmed if anyone sustained injuries in the inferno. “The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained. Fire-tenders have been rushed to the spot,” said an official of the State Fire and Emergency Services.

Earlier, fire had broken out also at Harijan Colony at Kahilipara last night, gutting several houses. Three persons who sustained burn injuries were rushed to hospital. It took more than three hours for the firefighters to douse the blaze.

An official of the State Fire and Emergency Services said the cause of the fire could not be ascertained. “It could be due to short-circuit or firecrackers. We are trying to find out the exact reason,” the official stated.

“Many families have been rendered homeless. They do not know where to go now,” a local resident said.
