Erosion wreaks havoc in south Gohpur areas
Correspondent
HALEM, Nov 7 – Continuous erosion by the Brahmaputra on the southern part of Gohpur constituency has become a major problem for the people living under Lohitmukh, Raonamukh, Pichola, Subansiri and Bartamuli gaon panchayats, in Pub-Chaiduar development block.

In the last five years, the Brahmaputra has eaten up villages like Bukbarchuk, Kaniachuk, Kutumgaon, Bhalukaguri, Barata, Gutung, Purana-Chapari, Kayoiati etc.

The 5 km bund covering Amguri Medhi Chuba to Charaibari has already been damaged. Homesteads of many inhabitants, including Chatkura Kutum, Gopikanta, Kanuram Kutum, Budhiram Pegu, Nimook Kutum, Bipul Kutum, Machua Kutum, Tularam Kutum are gone due to erosion. Some leading persons said that a boulder spur from Sadhuchapari, a border area between Sonitpur and Lakhimpur districts, may help stop the erosion. On the other hand, the E and D bund at Raonamukh-Charaibari need improvement and government should see to it. The people and some organisations alleged that although MMK, TMPK and AASU have sent memoranda to the government about the serious situation, nobody has paid any heed to it.
