State table tennis tourney gets off

 GUWAHATI, Nov 5 - The 64th Donic Sitaram Agarwala Inter District and State Table Tennis Championship got under way at the Desbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium in the RG Baruah Sports Complex here today.

The championship was inaugurated by Utpal Bora, Chairman and Managing Director of the Oil India Limited in a well attended opening ceremony.

OIL officials SK Mahapatra, Director E and D, PK Sharma, Director Operation, Jayanta Borgohain, Residential Chief Executive, Duliajan, noted TT players Madalasa Baruah, Nandini Baruah, Shankar Dutta Lahkar, Carfew Roy, Gautam Hazarika among others were also present on the occasion.

The tournament has been organised by the Assam Table Tennis Association (ATTA) where around 250 players from ATTA affiliated units like Namrup, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Duliajan, Golaghat, Guwahati, Nagaon, NF Railway, Nazira, Tezpur, Jorhat, Silchar, OIL are taking part.

The ATTA secretary Tridib Duvarah welcoming the gathering said that the present State TT body is leaving no stone unturned to provide all possible help to the players so that they can excel in the national circuit.

Inaugurating the championship, Bora said that the State government is planning to set up a sports school in the State and OIL has promised to provide all possible support in building the project. He also intimated that the OIL is sponsoring this event.
