Workshop on evaluation reforms in higher educational institutions

 GUWAHATI, Nov 4 - A two-day workshop on ‘Evaluation Reforms in Higher Education Institutions’ organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the Northeast began today at the Azara campus of Assam Don Bosco University.

The purpose of the workshop is to understand and discuss the evaluation reforms in higher education. There will be various sessions and activity-oriented practices led by eminent speakers during the two days.

“Amidst rapid demands of constant change put forth by a globalized economy, the higher education sector in India is going through its transformation stage and the UGC, in this connection, has introduced evaluation reforms for comprehensive assessment of the students inculcating the critical thinking and to unleash their potential to take the baton of change and growth,” said Dr Nikhil Kumar, Education Officer, UGC in his welcome address.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University, Fr Jospeh Nellanatt delivered the opening remarks on the occasion. In his speech he praised the efforts put in by UGC in forming such a reforms programme of evaluation system in the universities and HEIs.

In his inaugural address, Prof TK Majumder, Vice Chancellor, Techno Global University, Meghalaya, stressed the immediate implementation needs and institutional acquisition of reforms. He also pointed to the challenges in bringing about such progressive mend.

The experts deliberated upon the rationale and methodology of technology-enabled comprehensive assessment in the higher education system to bring in a change for coming out of pen and paper mode of examination which emphasizes rote learning in the race to get higher marks.

The occasion was also attended by Dr. Gopi Chand M., Deputy Secretary UGC NERO, Prof Gursaran and Prof RS Pavithr from Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra, Fr Dr Biju Michael, Registrar, Assam Don Bosco University, and Prof. Manoranjan Kalita, Director, School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University.

About a hundred participants comprising Controllers of Examinations, officers and examination staff from 45 universities and autonomous institutions from the Northeast are attending the two-day programme.
