Rich tributes paid to Sardar Patel

 GUWAHATI, Nov 1 - The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) celebrated National Unity Day on October 31, introduced by the Government of India in 2014 to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was instrumental in keeping India united.

The programme at the University campus, located on the outskirts of Guwahati, was started with a welcome address by Debendranath Basumatary, ADG, Doordarshan, who reminded the students of the significance of observing the day.

The chief guest, PVSLN Murthy, CGM, SBI, North East Circle, cited the importance of maintaining and strengthening the unity in diversity of the country and urged the students of USTM to read the biography of Sardar Patel so that students can shape their personality in keeping with his ideology, get to learn about his relentless struggle to adjudicate and integrate different parts of the country.

Dilip Kr Das, Station Director, Aakashvani, Guwahati, asserted that the theme of unity should be echoed in all spheres of life and it should not be just a one-day affair.

Symbolising unity in diversity, students performed zikir, Rabindra Sangeet, Bihu dance, Khasi dance, Wangle dance, regional folk dance, ethnic show, etc, said a statement.
