GUWAHATI, May 30 – A daylong seminar on ‘Police accountability and civil society’ was held on Sunday at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara under the aegis of the Assam State Police Accountability Commission and the Assam State Legal Services Authority, an official release stated.
Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court Madan B Lokur inaugurated the seminar which was organised with a view to augmenting awareness among the people for redress of police misconduct.
Chairman of the Assam State Police Accountability Commission Justice DN Choudhury (retired) delivered the keynote address while executive chairman of the Assam State Legal Services Authority Justice Amitava Roy also spoke in the inaugural session of the seminar.
Eminent persons like Dr Hiren Gohain, Prakash Singh, IPS (retired), Dhirendra Nath Bezboruah, Anil Kumar Bhattacharyya, DGP Shankar Baruah, Home Commissioner Jishnu Baruah and Dr Anuradha Dutta discussed on the topics, ‘Public perception on police accountability,’ ‘Instruments of police accountability,’ ‘Civil liaison towards transparency and police accountability,’ ‘Role of legal fraternity in creating awareness towards police accountability,’ ‘Role of Director General of Police in ensuring police accountability,’ ‘Police accountability and good governance’ and ‘Ethics, police accountability and civil society.’
The seminar was attended by senior government officials, experts on police reforms, legal luminaries, professionals on police works, leading citizens, law students and media persons, the release added.
