Strict steps planned against traffic violators
Staff reporter
GUWAHATI, May 30 – Joint team of traffic and transport department, which of late, has launched a drive against traffic violation, is gearing up to further intensify the campaign on traffic rules in and around the city.

Sources informed that the traffic department, during the last fortnight, has slapped fines on violators in a massive way and a huge amount of money has been collected.

“Apart from those violating the rules by indulging in haphazard parking, we would be more stringent on those driving without proper driving license and registration papers,” said an Assam Police (traffic) official while talking to this Correspondent.

He went on to inform that the departments are also keeping a close watch on those riding bikes without helmets and using cell phones while driving.

“Hundreds of violators have been fined in the last one month or so but there is a need to tighten the noose on the erring drivers,” he opined.

“Though the exact amount of the fine collected till date would be difficult to say, but it is quite hefty,” informed the official, adding that fines collected from wrong parking has contributed the most to the State exchequer.

“Earlier too, we had conducted such drives but this time we are planning to go in a planned and extensive manner,” he said.

The stringent steps, he explained, was being taken after a stiff rise in the number of road mishaps in and around the city.

Another official, when asked, stated that the National Highways too has witnessed a spurt in the number of road mishaps, which continues to be a matter of concern.

He also informed that a slew of measures, which the department is planning to introduce in the near future, are on the pipeline.
