Staff reporter
GUWAHATI, May 28 – The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today staged protest demonstrations across the State demanding exemplary punishment to those involved in supplying spurious drugs that has resulted in the hospitalisation of students.

Recently many girl students had been hospitalised after they took iron tablets distributed by the Government. The incident invited the criticism of the political parties as well as student organisations with everyone slamming the Government for its lackadaisical attitude towards the development.

The AASU said that the incident has proved the inefficiency of the Tarun Gogoi-led Government and demanded of the Government to ban the company supplying spurious drugs and arrest of the owner of the company.

“We insist the Government ensure the requisite medical care to the affected students as well as provide compensation to them,” said the AASU calling upon the Government to test the quality of the iron tablets before distributing in other districts.

“It is very unfortunate that even the Chief Minister is trying to shield those involved in this racket of supplying of substandard drugs,” said the AASU mentioning that this Government which announces compensation on the slightest pretext has till now not announced any compensation for affected students of vernacular medium schools.

The AASU said the Government must ensure that such an incidents did not recur.

Members of All Kamrup District Students Union staged a demonstration at Dighalipukhuri here and dubbed the health department as the most corrupt department in the State.
