GUWAHATI, May 25 - An awareness rally was today organised by Shishu Sarothi at Birubari here. The objective of the rally was to make people aware of its work and the rights of persons with disabilities. Shishu Sarothi has been working towards ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities across the North-east for the past three decades.
The rally was organised in collaboration with the Regional Action for Inclusive Education North-East (RAISE-North East) project.
RAISE North East, supported by three international agencies, CBM, JVS and LFW, is a project to complement the flagship programme of Sarva Siskha Abhiyan (SSA). RAISE-NE has 15 partners in the North-east who will work directly with the SSA of the respective States, with an aim to make 75 SSA schools completely inclusive by 2020. Shishu Sarothi is the lead advocacy partner for the RAISE-NE project.
“With the firmly embedded principles of equality and non-discrimination for persons with disabilities as the bedrock of the new disability law (The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016), there is a clear mandate for all stakeholders to ensure access to rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities, and the objective of the rally was to sensitise the community on the rights of persons with disabilities, send a message to decision makers to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to participate actively in society, and create awareness among local bodies that all children have the right to quality inclusive education,” a Shishu Sarothi spokesperson said.
