Manish Deka scales Mount Everest

 GUWAHATI, May 24 – Manish Kumar Deka (41) today became the second person from Assam to conquer the world’s highest peak Mount Everest.

Deka reached the summit around 5:35 am today.

On May 18, Assam’s Tarun Saikia became the first climber to reach the top of Mount Everest.

Manish Kumar Deka, a resident of Hatigarh Chariali area of the city, climbed the summit under the aegis of Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association and supported by the Manipur government. The expedition was sponsored by the North Eastern Council.

Having completed his graduation from the Gauhati Commerce College, Deka had participated in a number of expeditions over the years.

Family members hailed the feat and said that Deka was committed towards his goal from childhood. “He had a dream of conquering the peak in which he succeeded today,” family members and relatives said.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, following the feat, has announced Rs 20 lakh for Deka.

The leading adventure organizations of the State – Explorers, Assam Mountaineering Association and Assam Rock & Sports Climbing Association – have extended their greetings to Manish Kr Deka, who has, along with Tarun Saikia, fulfilled the long cherished dreams of all mountaineers and adventure lovers of the State.

The All Assam Students’ Union has also congratulated Deka for his achievement.
