GUWAHATI, May 23 - The North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (NERAMAC) is all set to give the Guwahatians a taste of the Queen variety of pineapple which is grown in Tripura.
Said to be the ‘Best in the world’ for its sweetness and less fibre, the Tripura Queen Pineapple is free of any chemical residue, thus making the fruit naturally organic.
At present, the pineapples will be available at the kiosk of NERAMAC at Bipanan Kshetra (Organic Hub) in Panjabari, Guwahati.
Speaking about their initiative, Pankaj Kr Prasad, MD, NERAMAC, said, “The Tripura Queen Pineapple is the best variety of pineapple known for its golden yellow colour and pleasant aroma and flavour. In 2015, NERAMAC had helped the Tripura Queen Pineapple get the GI tag and we are glad to introduce this variety to the people of Guwahati.”
Subhas Bhattacharjee, Executive Director of NERAMAC, said the Queen variety was not just distinctly special in comparison with other varieties grown elsewhere in India, but also significantly different in quality from the same variety grown in other states.
The fruit weighs 0.8 to 1.3 kg. Its peduncle is short, and the fruit-lets or eyes are small, prominent, and deep-set. When fully mature, the fruits are spiny, golden yellow in colour and emit a pleasant aroma and flavour at the ripening stage.
