TURA, May 19 – In a major breakthrough in the fight against dacoit gangs operating along the Assam-Meghalaya border, the West Garo Hills police team has nabbed five suspected dacoits from Tangaon, near Selsella.
The dacoits were apprehended along with rods and sticks in their possession at about 11.30 pm on May 13 by a police patrol party doing the rounds following increased dacoity cases that were being reported around the area.
The police said that the dacoits were moving around suspiciously during the night and upon being nabbed confessed to being a part of some previous incidents as well. The apprehended criminals were from Assam. All of them are now in police custody.
SP Mukesh Kumar Singh said that the arrested criminals have confessed and given some clues about other crimes, which the police would investigate further.
On May 15, police recovered two shot guns, one knife, five live cartridges along with Rs 20,000 during a search operation.
Again on May 17, acting on a tip off, the police was able to recover two pistols along with 10 live rounds and a Chinese grenade from Mukdangra, about 6 kms from Garobadha police outpost. The items were lying abandoned in the forest.
