STAFF Reporter GUWAHATI, May 18 - Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla called on Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the latter’s office chamber at Janata Bhawan here this evening. They discussed various issues relating to empowerment of socially and economically backward Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities.

Chief Minister Sonowal informed the Union Minister that there are many people belonging to SC and ST communities in Assam who would be immensely benefited by the welfare schemes of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of the Union government.
Expressing keen interest in making best use of the schemes of the Ministry, the Chief Minister said that the State government would come up with appropriate projects for extending benefit to the SC and ST communities and would soon submit proposals to the Union government.
Sampla, while appreciating the proactive attitude of the Chief Minister, assured him of extending financial assistance to the State government in setting up hostels for boys and girls of SC and ST communities to the tune of Rs 2.70 crore and Rs 3.5 crore respectively against each hostel.
Apprising Sonowal of the schemes implemented by the Ministry, Sampla said that the Government of Assam can submit proposals for setting up a rehabilitation centre for drug abuse, old age home with day care centre and projects for empowerment of the specially abled.
Advising the State government to rope in the services of the reputed NGOs also in implementing schemes to be funded by the Union Ministry, Sampla also requested the Chief Minister to take steps for submitting utilisation certificates for schemes against which funds have already been released during the last few years, said a press release.
