Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, May 18 - Noted communist leader Jnanadabhiram Saikia died this morning at a city-based hospital.

A popular leader of the progressive students’ movement in the State, Saikia was elected as the general secretary of Gauhati University Post Graduate Students’ Union in 1974 as a candidate of the SFI.

He was the founder general secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) State Committee.

“He also had immense contributions as secretary of the South East Regional Committee of the CPI(M) and strengthened the leftist movement in the region. As a vocal supporter of democracy, he was put in jail for 19 months for protesting the emergency situation in the country in 1975. Saikia’s death is an irreparable loss to the left and democratic movement in the State,” a statement issued by the CPI(M) said today.

The Kamrup district committee of the party paid its tribute to Saikia and extended its sympathies to the bereaved family. His last rites will be performed tomorrow.
