|Meet of ’56 batch matriculates of GU|
GUWAHATI, May 17 - The mid-term meet of the Confluence’56, a body of the matriculates of the 1956 batch of the Gauhati University, was held recently at a city hotel with its president Dr BR Bhuyan in the chair.
At the very outset, the members condoled the demise of their batchmate Dr Kali Prasad Saikia, retired professor and HoD of the ENT Department of the Gauhati Medical College. The meeting also paid homage to Prof Dilip Kumar Barua, former Principal of Cotton College, and playwright Arun Sarma, and prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls. Members described all three of them as geniuses in their respective domains.
After the presentation of the half-yearly report by Prof Manjumala Das, one of the secretaries of the Confluence’56, and appraisal of up-to-date financial position by its treasurer Dr Beena Tamuli, Hem Chandra Sarma delivered a lecture describing his experience of touring the Himalayas while he was posted at Dehradun as a geologist. Members of the Confluence’56 offered greetings to their batchmate Col (Retd) Jiten Hazarika, who has been conferred with an honorary doctorate by the Gauhati University in recognition of his contribution in the field of fine arts. The meeting also thanked the University authority for selecting Col Hazarika for the honour.
Several members and their spouses, namely Giti Dutta, Gopal Krishna Hazarika, Pranati Sarma, Kalyan Dutta, Pradip Barua, Captain Robin Bordoloi, Esha Choudhury, Krishna Phukan, Binapani Gogoi, Ramesh Phukan, Hem Ch Sarma, Loka Nath Das, Manjumala Das and Col Manoranjan Goswami participated in the recitation and cultural programme.
