AIZAWL, May 16 - A wild bear attacked a couple in a forest in Mamit district in western Mizoram, seriously injuring both of them on Tuesday, officials said today.
Lianhawla (54) and his wife, Lalnunthari (45) were walking in the forest between their village Tuidam and neighbouring village Kawrthethawveng to collect bamboo shoots when the bear suddenly appeared from the woods. The incident took place at around 12 noon.
A team of doctors travelling on the road that passes through the forest heard their cries for help. As they stopped, they saw the bloodstained man coming out of the forest. Later, his wife also crawled out on the road.
As the couple’s condition was critical, the Forest department hired a helicopter and airlifted them to Aizawl. While Lianhawla is being treated at the Aizawl Civil Hospital, his wife was referred to the State Referral Hospital, Falkawn. Sources said the woman may need to undergo reconstructive plastic surgery.
