AGARTALA, May 16 - The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the sensational murder of journalist Sudip Dutta Bhowmik here last year has submitted a charge sheet against four accused persons – former Commandant Tapan Debbarma, Nanda Kumar Reang, Amit Debbarma and Dharmendra Singh – for their alleged involvement in the case.
The charge sheet was submitted at the Additional District and Sessions Court under Sections 302 and 120B of the IPC and Sections 34 and 27 of the Arms Act. All the four accused in the murder case are in judicial custody.
According to sources, the trial of the case may begin on July 17 after completion of the official procedure. Altogether 64 persons have been listed as witnesses.
When contacted, State Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath today said the State Government had already requested the CBI through a competent authority to undertake the probe into the case.
“We have not received any communication from the CBI whether it would take up the case for investigation or not. Under the circumstances, it is better that the court should go ahead with the case,” he told.
On November 21, 2017, Bhowmik, a senior journalist associated with the Syandan Patrika, was mysteriously shot dead at the headquarters of the 2nd Bn Tripura State Rifles (TSR), RK Nagar, sparking outrage across the State.
Amid growing demand for a CBI probe into the alleged murder case, the erstwhile Left Front Government ordered a high-level inquiry by setting up a three-member SIT.
After a thorough inquiry, the Deputy Inspector General Arindam Nath-headed SIT has filed a charge sheet against the four accused persons on the basis of scientific evidence.
