JORHAT, May 15 - Joint secretary of the State Revenue and Disaster Management Department and former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Jorhat, Bubul Lekharu was sent to five-day police custody today by the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) here after he was produced in the court by police. The senior bureaucrat was arrested on Sunday night.
Lekharu was summoned to Jorhat Police Station yesterday in connection with a case of criminal conspiracy, cheating and dishonesty, criminal breach of trust. He came to the police station armed with a court order that granted interim bail for him in the case (No. 875/17 of Jorhat PS).
However, he was arrested by police in connection with two other cases (No. 2523/16 and No. 357/15) which were kept pending at the same police station since a long time. Investigators said that the bureaucrat was charged under Sections 166, 167, 420 and 409 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in connection with the case No. 357/15, while the police imposed Sections 409, 468, 471, 420 and 34 of the IPC for the other case registered in 2016.
Both the two cases are related to misappropriation of untied fund of the district during his tenure as District Development Officer (DDO) and misuse of administrative power and public money of Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB) through criminal breach of trust.
