GUWAHATI, May 15 - Arunabh Gohain emerged champion in the Young Masters Chess Classic, organised by the Guwahati Chess Academy at its RG Baruah Road premises here.
In the final round of the championship yesterday Arunabh beat Ashvin Sharma and collected three points to top the table overtaking overnight leader Pranit Malhotra.
Manthan Kashyap Datta drew his final round game with Pranit Malhotra and scored 2.5 points. Pranit also scored 2.5 points but Manthan was declared second and Pranit third on better tie-break score. Pran Gobinda Parasar Kashyap got the 4th position with 1.5 points while Ashvin Sharma came 5th with .5 point.
The tournament was held among the five talented and promising players of Assam which was played in round robin system in classical time control. The tournament was conducted by Pranab Kumar Nath as chief arbiter. Bibhuti Gogoi, Fide arbiter and former president of the All Assam Chess Association and Sankar Sarma, adviser of the Guwahati Chess Association distributed the prizes in the closing function.
