AGARTALA, May 15 – Trinamool Congress, which just ended 34 years long Left rule in West Bengal, now has set its sight on Tripura, another State ruled by the Communists for the last 18 years.Convener of Tripura unit of Trinamool Congress, Manik Deb said his party would like to launch a united movement with Congress to fight against the Left Front in this Northeastern State. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is also likely to visit Tripura soon to strengthen the party machinery here, he said.
When contacted, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president Tapas Dey said, “Since we would like to strengthen the anti-Communist movement, we would also like a united movement with Trinamool Congress to fight against the misrule of the Left Front.”
Leader of the Opposition Ratan Lal Nath said, “The Congress will take the initiative to unite all anti-Left political forces in the State for a united movement.”
Nath said Congress President Sonia Gandhi, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi and other Central leaders will start visiting Tripura from this month itself and take part in a series of mass movements.
Taking guard, CPI-M State secretary Bijan Dhar on the other hand said the party would meet soon to identify weaknesses to take remedial measures.
“It is true that winds of change had been blowing across Bengal for the past few years, but we could not assess its intensity... We expected a close contest in the Assembly elections, but that did not happen,” Dhar, also a Central committee member of the party, told reporters at the party headquarters here.
He assured that there was no reason to worry as the State election is due in 2013.
“We have a good mandate. The anti-Left forces will hatch a plot to destabilise the government in Tripura by using money, muscle power and media. We must remain alert and do more work to develop the State and maintain peace and tranquility,” he said.
