|City to host NE chess meet|
GUWAHATI, may 14 – An open chess tournament among the school students of north-eastern States will be organised at the South Point School Indoor Hall here from May 23. Guwahati Chess Association (GCA) is the organiser of the championship which will be sponsored by South Point School. All Assam Chess Association has agreed to recognise the tournament where any school student of upto class XII will be eligible to take part.
Addressing the media Anil Krishna Mishra and Mrinal Kakati, president and secretary of GCA said a total purse of Rs 40,500 is at stake as prize money for the tournament and the top three position holders will take away Rs 8,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 6,000 respectively along with trophies. Cash prizes will be given to top 15 place holders. The organisers revealed that about 150 players are expected to take part in the meet which will be played in nine-round Swiss League basis. GCA has already appealed the players of this region to take part in the five-day meet. Players have to send their entries with a join fees of Rs 300 on or before May 21. Anjan Chanda, principal of South Point School was also present in the press conference and apprised about the infrastructure of the school for holding such a big event. He also hoped that all the leading players will be seen in action in this tournament.
