Embankment breached in South Karimganj
Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, May 13 - A breach in the embankment along Longai river has inundated vast areas of south Karimganj constituency leaving many villagers homeless.

According to sources, the breach covering a stretch of 30 metres was detected on the embankment at Badagaon due to which many low lying areas have been submerged.

Residents of the affected villages have expressed their serious concern over the apathy of the concerned departments in repairing the embankments.

“With heavy rains lashing hard over the past few days, we anticipated that the weak embankments might be affected,” the locals echoed.

On the other hand, Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Pradip Kumar Talukdar, who visited the affected site told The Assam Tribune that along with the embankments at Badagaon, majority of the embankments in the district have undergone wear and tear over the past two decades. He was quick to add that the breeches would be repaired soon.  The officials have been instructed to keep a close vigil on the repair works, the Deputy Commissioner said.
