NALBARI, May 11 - The people of Hablakha, Pub Hanapara and Bullutpar areas in the bordering areas of Nalbari and Kamrup Rural districts have been trying to divert the flow of Pagladiya river to save themselves from erosion of the river.

The massive erosion by the Pagladiya river has already eroded an embankment-cum-road connecting those villages. Besides the erosion has also eaten up vast areas of agricultural land along with a good number of valuable trees. It is now posing a threat to the dwelling houses in the localities. The villagers say that despite repeated pleas, the department concerned has taken no steps to check the erosion. Finding no option left, the villagers raised funds from house to house and dug out a one-kilometre-long canal on the right side of the river. Finally, they constructed two bamboo spurs to divert the flow through the new canal. The people are hopeful that the river will take its new course through the canal.
