SHILLONG, May 11 - A 52-year-old woman died at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences’ (NEIGRIHMS) allegation-hit Cardiology department.
The patient passed away last night at about 10.15 pm. The patient was admitted at the Institute on May 5 with a heart condition and was scheduled to be operated.
However, in the meantime the allegation of stents and pacemakers being purchased illegally by doctors in the department cropped up.
Although it is not clear whether the patient died due to the delay in the hospital, as all surgery was put on hold for days in the past week, sources said she was on life support for a couple of days.
Work at the Cardiology department came to a standstill as the Institute Director Dr DM Thapa claimed that private vendors were illegally selling stents and pacemakers at the Institute instead of procuring from the Amrit Pharmacy.
