Raju Das
SHILLONG, May 10 – Meghalaya Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested the Deputy Registrar of Chandra Mohan Jha (CMJ) University, Premlal Rai, but was admitted to a hospital after complaining about his health.Last evening Rai was arrested by CID sleuths for interrogation. Rai along with Chancellor of the University, Chandra Mohan Jha have applied for anticipatory bail, which was rejected by the district court here. However, after Rai complained about his health, he was admitted to the Shillong Civil Hospital.

Meanwhile, there is uncertainty on the whereabouts of Jha. Rai had earlier informed that Jha is in Bihar to attend a wedding of one of his relatives. However, nothing has been heard of the elusive Chancellor so far.

The University’s campus in the State capital here has been sealed by the CID and raids are being conducted. This decision was taken after the Governor’s Secretariat filed an FIR against the University for flouting norms.

The University allegedly awarded 434 PhD degrees to students, mostly from Assam, during 2012-2013. However, Rai has denied the allegations saying that no such PhD degrees were given.

Governor RS Mooshahary, who is a Visitor of the University said in his order that he received several complaints that students were being awarded PhD degrees, which the University is not authoried to give under University Grants Commission norms. The Governor has asked the University for a compliance report to be submitted within May 21.
