HAFLONG, May 8 - In order to motivate and to train the farmers of Dima Hasao, the Dima Hasao Division of Agriculture introduced summer paddy cultivation for the first time in the district.
Paddy is the mainstay of the people of Dima Hasao district and normally sali paddy is cultivated depending on rain-fed condition from April to November. After harvesting sali paddy, the vast agricultural lands remain vacant with no farming activity. As a result, the farmers can harvest their crop only once a year from the same plot of' land. In many families, one-time production of paddy per year is not sufficient to feed the entire family for the whole year. Obviously, hunger stalks the family.
Not surprisingly, the NCHAC has to import foodgrains from outside the district at huge cost, which adversely affects all-round development of the district.
The total geographical area of Dima Hasao is 4,890 sq km, where the total cultivable area is 32,800 hectare. Hence, to feed the population of Dima Hasao, there is a huge shortfall. If mono-cropping is still followed under the present circumstances, then the amount of foodgrain necessary for the population can never be harvested.
So it is necessary to go for 2 to 3 crops per year in the same plot of land for producing sufficient foodgrains to feed the total population of Dima Hasao.
Talking to this Correspondent, the Executive Engineer (Agriculture) Dima Hasao Division at Halong, Fayijul Islam said that as per instruction and suggestion of the Executive Member of NC Hills Autonomous Council Subrata Thaosen, the Dima Hasao Division of Agriculture initiated the summer paddy cultivation.
In order to address the problem of hunger, we need to go for modern scientific, hybrid and short-duration multiple-cropping pattern by using mechanised implements during every stage of cultivation, right from tillage to harvesting and assured irrigation right from seedling raising to the end of harvesting, he said.
It may be mentioned here that there is little possibility of STW in Diyungbra area. The only water available in the rivers and rivulets by way of lifting in step with the help of 5 HP diesel water pumpset, or from springs available in some parts of Dima Hasao by way of check dam.
So let us think of utilising the vacant plots in the district by engaging in summer paddy cultivation where surface water sources are available with the help of SHP diesel engine pumpset.
In order to utilise the land from useless condition to useful condition by way of summer paddy cultivation, i.e., double- cropping. Summer paddy cultivation can be done from the month of January to May. This is called summer paddy cultivation as harvesting is done in summer. Since the sun’s rays are strong during this period, hence maximum production can be expected amounting to 600 kg per hectare to 900 kg per hectare if the climatic condition is favourable along with HYV, weather-resistant short-duration variety, and the doses of fertilizer is properly used.
The main problem of summer paddy cultivation is inadequate irrigation, which is possible only by way of lifting the surface water of the rivers within the district by 5 HP diesel engine pumpsets.
