Development main issue for Dhubri voters
GOLAKGANJ, March 29 – As the State gears up for the Lok Sabha elections and candidates of various political parties are out on the streets with bagfuls of promises, the voters of Dhubri are committed to electing a dedicated MP “who can address their basic problems.” The people of the Dhubri town area, which has a population of around 85,000, will vote on the issue of development, rather than in favour of any particular political party or candidate.

“We have lost faith in the promises made by poll candidates. Yet, since we must contribute to the democratic system by exercising our voting rights, we would like the MP candidates to look into a number of problems which we have been facing since long,” said public activist Aminur Ahmed. One of the major problems plaguing the people in Dhubri town is waterlogging with no proper channels for excess water to flow out from the area. “Dhubri is a border area of the State. Tension always prevails among the people, especially those living along the Assam-Bangladesh border. Land settlement and proper demarcation of the border are necessary to prevent untoward incidents in the future,” Ahmed said.

The people of Dhubri town have also been demanding access to potable water for long. The lack of a flyover at Senpara to ease the traffic congestion is a problem not just for the local residents, but also others who face a lot of chaos on the Dhubri College Road and the Dhubri RK Mission Road crossing, especially during the peak hours. The State Government started several flyover projects, but the long-standing demand to construct a flyover at Dhubri has not been fulfilled. “We want our next MP to initiate developmental activities in our area in a major way and develop the Dhubri Civil Hospital with all modern amenities. We want a medical college in the hospital for the benefit of our people,” Samol Sanyal, a resident of Dhubri town, said.
